DropPerch Watch a domain free

Comparison

DropPerch vs Watchman Tower

Watchman Tower is a low-cost website monitor that tracks uptime, SSL and domain expiry together. DropPerch tracks only domains, and checks every one of them every day.

The short answer

Choose Watchman Tower if you run websites and want uptime, SSL and expiry for a handful of them at a very low price, with a mobile app and push notifications. Its $5.99 Solo plan covers 50 sites, uptime checks every minute included.

Choose DropPerch if the thing you are responsible for is a list of domains — client domains, brand variants, names with no site on them — and you want each one read from the registry daily, with an alert when one moves into redemption or goes on hold.

How often the date is re-checked

Watchman Tower publishes its schedule: it reads the expiry date from WHOIS and RDAP when a site is added, re-checks at least once a week, and checks daily once a domain is inside 30 days of expiry. That is a sensible design for a website monitor, and it means a domain far from expiry may be up to a week stale.

DropPerch reads every watched domain from the registry every day, whatever its date. That matters less for the expiry date — which rarely changes — and more for everything else on the record: a registrar can put a domain on hold, or a renewal can fail and the domain can slip into redemption, on any day of the year.

Dates versus states

Watchman Tower's reminders are thorough — 30, 14, 7, 3 and 1 days before, plus a notice the day after if the domain was not renewed. What its documentation does not describe is alerts on registry status: clientHold, redemptionPeriod, pendingDelete. Those are the states that tell you a domain is actually in trouble, and the difference between them is the difference between a restore fee and a lost name. DropPerch emails you when a watched domain enters any of them.

What it costs for 25 and 100 domains

Watchman Tower is the better value if you want uptime monitoring too. DropPerch is the better value if you only need the domains watched, or if many of them are not websites — a defensive registration has no uptime to check, but still costs a slot in a website monitor.
